Doctor Tesla: Destroy this letter after you read it. I must inform you, that the two test torpedoes are not exactly what we expected. Test torpedo number one, the example with the lead acid battery, leaked sulfuric acid out of its case, and poisoned two workmen with a chlorine gas discharge. This was before we were able to prepare it for its first range run. After the first range run it sank and we had to dredge for it. It was somewhat damaged. We took it back to the repair shop to restore it to run condition for range test number two. In the repair shop, while we attempted to restore it, it caught fire and exploded. From the debris, we have determined that the lead acid battery cells vented hydrogen gas and blew up the repair shop. You will be billed for the repair shop, and the funeral expenses for the five workmen killed. Test torpedo number two, the example with the nickel-iron battery, we discovered, also leaks hydrogen gas from its battery cells. This, however, has been mitigated by the lessons we learned from test torpedo number one. We have applied a vent burner to harmlessly burn off the hydrogen gas discharge and have added a circulatory ventilation circuit to test torpedo number two. This solution has also solved most of the problems with the copy of test torpedo number one we reconstructed from your blueprints supplied us. In regard to test torpedo number two in its range runs, it has stayed within specified wander limits over the distance of three thousand three hundred meters (two nautical miles) and has hit the target net in four of five trials. The similar result has been achieved with our duplicate of test torpedo number one. The horizontal element of guidance works well enough for both examples. The vertical or depth keeping component is a bit of a problem, though. The torpedoes of either type tend to leap out of the water and skip along like a porpoise. While annoying, this has not prevented the devices from hitting its mark at eighty percent of the time in their range runs. As of this date, both examples are considered usable and for issue to the fleet. We do have a request. Could you devise a means for us to find these torpedoes after a test run? They sink due to almost a quarter ton of negative buoyancy. It takes us days to drag for them and dredge them up. As we would like to practice with these torpedoes and train crews to use them, perhaps you could devise a means to "float" them after a run? Obviously you did not read the instructions with which you were provided, or you would have seen that the torpedoes are to be vented periodically with the gas evaporated into the atmosphere? As to the circulator circuit and the hydrogen burn-off candle, I still foresee fires and explosions. Human beings are careless, and these machines do not tolerate "careless". 1. Lead-acid is far less expensive and lighter than nickel-iron as a battery system. If the vent circulator and hydrogen gas burner works as you say, and you accept the risks; then go ahead with the far cheaper option. I am a taxpayer. 2. I take it you use an inert ballast to simulate an explosive charge by mass, when you make these test runs? Use sodium bicarbonate, and vinegar in a two compartment frangible flask adjacent to a water-filled "inert" warhead. When the torpedo hits the practice target, the flask breaks; the vinegar and sodium bicarbonate mix, producing carbon dioxide gas. That will expel most of the water inside the container through a one way relief valve. The result is a balloon effect which will cause the exercise head to become buoyant and lift the torpedo nose end up, easily visible out of the water. Put a ring in the exercise head end, and paint the exercise head a bright color; probably red or yellow. When you send out the rowboat with the towline, affix the line to the tow ring feature and row the torpedo to shore. I presume this will inexpensively solve your lost torpedo problem. I. We have a problem as it relates to this timeline.Johnson County. Now the problem in more detail... In summary: a lot of Unreconstructed Confederates (Texans) had moved north as reverse Carpetbaggers to seek their fortunes in as yet Unincorporated Territories, after the Texas Rangers ran them out of their state in the late 1870s. These reprobates settled in their new homes and took up what they knew best, which was "ranching", which they had learned from their Mexican neighbors to the south. There was nothing fundamentally wrong with this socioeconomic development, except that these "rancher aristocrats" brought their " patron mentality" with them. Flood in homesteaders and in this timeline about 35,000 Chinese immigrants and the 6th Cavalry had to be pulled out of Arizona. They would be packed on a troop train and shipped north after the Apache Kid got his just deserts. Guess who went with them? It is here that the Army Lee rifle will be wrung out. I will write this much more.. Electric passenger pigeons ( www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/subterfuge for this item of history.), vertical controllers, and the great typhoon have a connection, as does the leaning tower. The lack of American weather stations and seismic activity sensors is a problem. I will add, for amusement, that Wyoming may have given women the vote, but the " barbed wire wars" that had erupted in New Mexico between sheepherders and cattlemen had become much worse in Wyoming and Montana. How much do you know about Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, reader? ======================================================================== A further note on the Rabaul expedition and setup of a "scientific seismic observatory". One of the advantages of the British Empire was their global meteorological service (at least along the equator and in Canada) and their virtual monopoly of underwater submarine telegraph line ownership. This is a little tidbit of timeline history. The former Massachusetts Institute of Technology campus, looking west on Boylston Street from near Berkeley Street in Boston, around 1890. Every so often, the ACME governing board of George Westinghouse, Charles Brush and Irene Tesla would meet and discuss "items of interest" sub rosa. The meeting place could be Cleveland, Syracuse or Boston at random locations. The topics could be unplanned. The Three Participants could be contentious. But the thrash outs usually cleared out misunderstandings and made "policy" work. This time, 4 July 1891, Irene Goss Davenport Tesla, is on her home turf in the multiple meanings of the term. She has some issues to resolve with her male peers. Charles Brush is the lesser problem. He is a technical and financial matter with dubious connections and entanglements as far as Irene's own ideology is concerned. It is George who will be the bigger issue. He has become ensnarled in affairs and events, which Irene finds distressing. The three of them stroll along Boylston Street, trailed by Boston police and a largish squad of Pinkertons. Nobody in their right minds was going to bother these people. =========================================================================== Charles: Are we "official"? They have let me stay after all. Sergeant Fritch was most instrumental in assuring that outcome with his reports of our expedition into Sonora and how much value my service was in the hunt for the Apache Kid. Pity that they kept the head. Since I wrote you last, I promised you an accounting of the New Mexico "range wars" that tore that territory asunder into a replay of the American Civil War. The territory split along the line of the sheepherders in the north and the ranchers to the south, roughly about the same time the Afghan tribes were giving us trouble on the Northwest Frontier. In the case of the New Mexico territory, this was compounded by a fierce war among the misnamed "Indians" of the Apache and Comanche nations at the same time. I have attached monographs of incidents and anthropological studies, which I anticipate you will have published for our club journal. The short version of those monographs about the tribes, is that when the Spanish conquistadors brought the horse to northern Mexico in the late sixteenth century, they made the mistake of allowing the Comanche tribe, a small scraggly group of savage hunter-gatherer denizens of northwest Texas, who were about to be exterminated by their more organized, agricultural, village dwelling and civilized neighbors, the Apaches, to acquire the use and knowledge of the same animal. That turned the Comanches into a fair New World imitation of the Mongol Horde. They promptly drove the Apaches out of western Texas, most of New Mexico and clear into Arizona. The Comanches went on to terrorize the Hopi, Pueblo and other Indian tribes in the region, even going so far as to route the Spanish and later the Mexicans out of the region. This seemed to settle things, until the Americans showed up, and then a new age of terror and warfare that has lasted down to the present opened up. The Comanche and Apache Wars are stuff of legend among the American Army, especially among their cavalry. Now consider, Norman, that you add to the mix, the American settler conflicts over water, grazing land and the differences among homesteaders, ranchers, sheepherders and miners and the Indians and the previous Mexican inhabitants. The Lincoln County War was a microcosm of that chaos. But to clarify that attached monograph, I must also include a bit of English invasiveness. It was peculiar to discover the Irish Troubles transplanted into the persons of some Union Army veteran Irish Catholic revanchists, who were hired by the army to supply Rebel Beef to African American cavalrymen. In strolls John Tunstall, a failed British second son of a Cavalier type. He competed for the same contracts and underbid the scoundrels. You know the Irish, Norman. They do not reason, when they see an Englishman bests them. We, and I include me in this set of particulars, because I now feel I am as much of the 6th US Cavalry as I was of the 15th Lancers, as witness my adventures, were supposed to take part in rounding up a gang of cutthroats in similar circumstances. Pilot boat assistance obtained upon dead reckoned approach to Raluauna Point. Port entry into the Blanche Bay made by telemeter ranging and pilot boat lead soundings. 3. Atmosphere unclear with distinct misted sooty haze. Clouds 80%. Visibility to shoreline reported by telemeter watch is 5,000 meters. Water choppy. 4. Engine plant at 25%. Watts on demand; 5kW standby; if needed. Condition X-ray set with Yoke authorized to OOD at discretion. 5. Signals of our arrival lamp flashed at local port authority, located at Walour. Response immediate with Mercantile Morse instructions to follow pilot boat to a pre-assigned anchorage inside Kerovia Bay. A boat is requested to be dispatched to Walour from us and whoever present is to be notified of our arrival as per our national regulations and international custom. 6. Ship condition nominal. =================================================================== This is what Bradley Fiske originally invented. In the USN Vernacular, it is called an "Is-Was". It is still used. Banjo This version is called the "Banjo".0 Guess who invented that one? US WWII Version. That is what the IJN used. The torpedo launch solution angle solver was a fairly simple mechanical trig slide rule that depended on the operator to insert two sets of estimated vectors and an estimated distance of angular separation between the vectors, as it is to what it was to solve the three body moving problem on a plane surface. Hence, the slide rule's other nickname. :"Is-Was" You can do this for naval artillery, too, since it is assumed the line of shell travel does not have a side drift error. The French did this work and called their 1890ish angle solver system the Lanzhou system. Time of run / fly out was measured in mere seconds. It was "reasonable enough for government work" to about three miles or 4,800 meters direct fire in clear weather with an ideal 10% probability of hit achieved. You can roughly estimate the time leads for naval shells for the era at 0 to 8 seconds at 600ish meters/second for average FLAT parabolas. For torpedoes, straight runners, with a tendency to nose wander about 30 meters for every 500 meters traveled (Whitehead) in this era and a pseudo speed of 10-13 m/s your effective run times were 150 seconds at slow and 115 at fast pseudo-speeds before a guaranteed miss. With a Howell, with its massive flywheel gyroscopic stabilization, the nose wander was about 20 meters per second per 500-meter run. That gave an outer bound range to miss of 2,500 meters. That theoretical limit in practice could not be achieved unless the flywheel was powered throughout its entire time of run, which would at pseudospeed range be 250 seconds for the lower bound or 192 seconds at the upper bound. Hence, the operating characteristics for maximum effective engagement ranges could be predicted on the basis of the available fire control systems and not the physical operating reach of the weapons. A naval gun could not hit anything reliably beyond 5,000 meters before the Percy Scott / William Sims reforms of 1900. As for the torpedo, anything beyond 50 seconds run time; it was a "luck" shot. Make it 500 to 650 meters for a three body problem.

It, that act, probably did nothing about the open carry of revolvers and shotguns or rifles in the "Wild West" (hunting being a liberal definition), though it will encourage "check your guns" laws and ordinances inside the cities, towns and villages of the region, but it did do something the late Emory Upton had tried to obtain as a military reform. It turned the United States into a giant Switzerland. Hello, National Guard. It also encouraged the introduction of the electrified walking stick and the resurgence of "fencing" as a martial hobby among Americans. Call it a law of unintended consequences, for it had other side effects: for consider the 14th Amendment. The Federal government had jurisdiction over state militias by this act and could regulate the composition and training of those militias. It would be the business of the Freedman's Coalition to ensure that the "requirement for every eligible voting male within the jurisdiction of the United States of America to register in person in his state for issue of a regulated firearm" be rigorously enforced. That "provision" was sure to make Unreconstructed Confederates in Louisiana "unhappy".

Since we have a severe shortage of qualified "officers", the army in its disorganized errant wisdom has decided to " Prussianize" me. I would be alright with that process, except it puts a wall between the troop and me and I have to take etiquette lessons from Pierce. He thinks "etiquette" means knowing how to use a butter knife. I have not the patience to teach him that proper etiquette out here means, not casting eyes on a Cheyenne woman, or greeting the chief with a hand outstretched to say, "Howdy". Both can wind you up dead faster than rattlesnake strike. I guess I should teach Pierce about that, too, and also to let his stirrups rust for purchase. He is not stupid, just "green" as June hay. We received our new trials rifles. Someone in Switzerland must have greased palms in Army Ordnance; or else, Crozier has a love affair with straight pulls. Upon inspection, this new one is probably worse than the first one we used on the Apache Kid. The bolt is a lot shorter and the locking lugs have been moved to the front. That magazine is still awkward. We will not be using saddle scabbards with it. I see the bungled cutoff lever, has been shortened. It is even stiffer than the long one on the previous one. The bullets are fully jacketed and not paper collared or greased like the test ammunition we used. I presume that means Rock Island developed a smokeless powder round instead of the compressed black powder rounds the Swiss supplied. I thought we had not found a powder yet that passed muster? The other rifle is a version of the Lee Navy, gussied and harlotted to take a small bore bullet. I rather like it. You load it by sticking a box magazine into the receiver and twist and pull the bolt. Simple. This one you can scabbard. You can shoot it from horseback. I will probably find something wrong with it the hard way. The Bozeman Trail. Yes, the Army ran an electrified railroad along it in 1892. Electrified and Civified FORT RENO? (^^^) That happens after the mess is cleaned up. This is what presently confronts our heroes.
