Why does gravity work near a black hole?
Summary?
If you were left confused, and I was, by Sabine's explanation of “virtual gravitons” then look at it this way. Gravity's effect, which is mediated by the boson called the graviton, is not a PULL of one object upon another. It is the CHANGE in the GEOMETRY of space-TIME. It is more akin to DRAG or impedance than a pull. That is, to write, that a graviton interaction between masses causes an uneven transit across an interval by one mass as it approaches another mass which affects the shape of that interval, and not directly on the masses. If that confuses you, then think of gravity as a CURRENT like a water flow or any fluid (tornado for gasses as an example). The “vacuum effect” is an illusion of the whirlpool that drags you under. What happens is that there is a difference in TIME flow of one edge of the fluid that you are in, that causes you to curl in the direction of the slower flow rate of the fluid. Think of it as inverted LIFT, where the outside of the fluid pushes you into the center of the whirlpool?
If you have that admittedly somewhat false analogy in mind, of spacetime as a fluid, with time being the flow medium, then you might understand that space flows into a black-hole like water drains into a sink drain. You are carried with it. So how do gravitons mediate that time drag effect? The gravitons have to escape from inside the black hole? Not really. If I understand what Sabine tried to explain (fluid dynamics is a bit beyond me.), then what happens is a form of gravitic radiation that mimics Hawking electromagnetic radiation. There should be particle pairs formed at the jitter which is spacetime at the event horizon. By jitter, I mean the random excitations of the vacuum rest state in the fluid or field that is spacetime itself. One half of the virtual graviton pair travels into the hole making the mediation inside the event horizon spacetime and one escapes, which mediates the external spacetime around the black hole causing that spacetime to flow INTO the event horizon.
Does that fluid explanation work? Well, it is the way Einstein might explain it.
